When the commission came through for this shoot I couldn’t believe our luck. I’ve wanted to photograph skateboarding ever since watching the Extreme Sports Channel as a kid. The speed and energy make it fantastic for photography.
We got in touch with the guys at Empire Skatepark to arrange a quiet afternoon and a few willing volunteers for the shoot. The venue was perfect, with tonnes of space to put lights without getting in the way of the skaters and loads of great backgrounds to work with.
The brief from the magazine was wide open so we let the skaters and the venue inform at lot of the shot choices. We wanted to work with a lot of lens flare so often we kept the lights in shot.
